Jarāsandha–Bhīma Niyuddha-prastāvaḥ

Commencement of the Regulated Duel

tāṃ tu dṛṣṭvā samṛddhiṃ te vīthyāṃ tasyāṃ narottamāḥ | rājamārgeṇa gacchantaḥ kṛṣṇabhīmadhanaṃjayāḥ | balād gṛhītvā mālyāni mālākārān mahābalāḥ ||

Educational Q&A

The verse juxtaposes civic splendor with an ethically charged act: even celebrated heroes may, under urgency or entitlement, impose upon common people. It invites reflection on restraint (dama) and fairness in public life—strength should be governed by dharma, not merely by capability.

Vaiśampāyana describes Kṛṣṇa, Bhīma, and Arjuna observing a richly prosperous street and then moving along the city’s main road. As they go, they take many garlands from florists by force, suggesting haste, assertion of status, or a deliberate display while entering the public thoroughfare.
