Arjuna’s Rapid Advance and the Bhīma–Śakuni Encounter

taiḥ karṇasyābhavad yuddhaṃ ghorarūpaṃ viśāṃpate | tādṛg yādṛk purā vṛttaṃ devānāṃ dānavaiḥ saha prajānātha ||

Educational Q&A

The verse uses a cosmic comparison (Devas vs Dānavas) to convey that unchecked martial fury can expand into a world-shaking catastrophe, reminding the listener that war is not merely tactical but morally and existentially consequential.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the fighting involving Karṇa has become extremely fierce and dreadful, comparable to the legendary battles between gods and demons in ancient times.
