Arjuna’s Rapid Advance and the Bhīma–Śakuni Encounter

sañjaya uvāca—rājan! pāñcālān cedikāruṣān kekayāṃś ca parivṛtān api bhīmasenaṃ vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ śaraiḥ samantād avarudhya tasya gatiṃ nyavārayat. tataḥ sa samare bhīmasenasya paśyataś cedikāruṣān sṛñjayāṃś ca mahārathān kṛtāntavad ajaghanat.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how martial excellence and determination, when directed solely toward victory, can become indiscriminate destruction. It invites reflection on kṣatriya-dharma: courage and skill are praised, yet the spectacle of slaughter before an opponent’s eyes also exposes the harsh moral weight of war.

Karna halts Bhima’s forward charge by hemming him in with arrows, despite Bhima being supported by allied contingents. Immediately afterward, in Bhima’s presence, Karna begins cutting down elite warriors from the Cedi, Karusha, and Sṛñjaya forces.
