Karṇa’s Appointment and the Report to Dhṛtarāṣṭra
Chapter 1
etan me sarvam ācakṣva vistareṇa mahāmune | na hi tṛpyāmi pūrveṣāṃ śṛṇvānāś caritaṃ mahat ||
The verse highlights śravaṇa (reverent listening) as a means of moral and cultural formation: the listener seeks detailed narration of ancestral exemplars, implying that remembering and hearing noble lives sustains values and guides conduct.
King Janamejaya urges the sage to continue the Mahābhārata account with fuller detail, expressing that he remains unsated by hearing the great deeds and character of his forefathers.
