भीष्मस्य भीमसेन-निरोधः
Bhīṣma checks Bhīmasena; matched engagements intensify
भूरिश्रवा विकर्णश्र भगदत्तश्न वीर्यवान् । महारथा: समाख्याता: कुलपुत्रास्तनुत्यज:,दुर्योधनने पूछा--पितामह! आप, द्रोणाचार्य, शल्य, कृपाचार्य, अश्वत्थामा, हृदिकपुत्र कृतवर्मा, कम्बोजराज सुदक्षिण, भूरिश्रवा, विकर्ण तथा पराक्रमी भगदत्त--ये सब महारथी कहे जाते हैं। सभी कुलीन और युद्धमें मेरे लिये अपना शरीर निछावर करनेको तैयार हैं
Bhūriśravā vikarṇaś ca bhagadattaś ca vīryavān | mahārathāḥ samākhyātāḥ kulaputrās tanutyajaḥ ||
难敌说道:“布利湿罗婆(Bhūriśravas)、毗迦尔那(Vikarna)与勇武的婆伽达多(Bhagadatta),皆被称为摩诃罗陀(mahāratha)的大车战勇士。他们出身高贵,愿为我之事业在战场上舍身。”
दुर्योधन उवाच
The verse highlights how power can appropriate the language of nobility and valor—“mahāratha,” “kulaputra,” “ready to die”—to secure allegiance. Ethically, it invites reflection on whether loyalty and heroic capacity are sufficient virtues when the cause itself is morally compromised.
Duryodhana is enumerating prominent warriors on his side, emphasizing their status as mahārathas and their willingness to sacrifice their lives for him. This serves to bolster confidence and project strength in the lead-up to battle.
