Daiva–Puruṣakāra Discourse and the Elephant-Corps Engagement (भीमगजानीक-सम्भ्रान्ति)

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores disciplined martial response (kṣatriya-dharma) in the face of an advancing enemy host, while also warning implicitly how anger (saṃkrodha) rapidly intensifies conflict and personalizes violence within a larger war.

Bhima, fighting alongside the Cedi forces, checks the advancing Kalinga army with arrow volleys and wounds Ketuman, the Nishada king’s son. In response, the enraged King Shrutayu arrives with Ketuman to confront Bhima as the Cedi troops stand arranged in battle formation.
