The verse highlights the psychological and ethical dimension of warfare: the display of irresistible force can collapse collective courage, reminding readers that violence carries a moral gravity (symbolized by Yama’s rod) and affects many beyond the immediate combatants.
Sañjaya reports that Śveta hurls a terrifying, radiant śakti-weapon. Its dreadful appearance—likened to Yama’s staff and to a newly-shed serpent—causes a great uproar and panic among the Kaurava troops (the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra).
