Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical strain of dharma in war: duty and survival can compel even righteous warriors to attack a venerable elder like Bhīṣma. It shows how anger and battlefield pressure can intensify resolve, raising questions about restraint, necessity, and the tragic cost of conflict.

Sañjaya reports that the Pāṇḍavas, provoked and wounded by Bhīṣma’s powerful archery, surge forward to strike him down; alongside them, the great warrior Sūñjayāśva also charges at Bhīṣma.
