Adhyāya 107 —
Multiple Defensive Engagements to Protect Bhīṣma
sātyakiḥ kṛtavarmāṇaṃ vārayitvā mahāraṇe | śarair bahuvidhair rājann āsasāda pitāmaham ||
The verse highlights kṣatriya-dharma in practice: a warrior restrains an immediate opponent and then advances toward the principal danger, showing disciplined courage and strategic focus rather than scattered aggression.
Sañjaya reports that Sātyaki holds back Kṛtavarman in the thick of battle and, releasing a varied volley of arrows, rushes to engage Bhīṣma, the Kaurava commander and ‘Grandsire’ of the Kurus.
