Vaiśampāyana uvāca | ucchaṁ mūlaṁ phalaṁ śākam udapātraṁ tapodhanāḥ | dānaṁ vibhavato dattvā narāḥ svaryānti dhārmikāḥ ||
Charity is judged by dharma and intention, and by giving in proportion to one’s capacity. Even the simplest offerings—gleaned grain, roots, fruits, vegetables, or water—can lead to heavenly merit when given righteously.
Vaiśampāyana addresses ascetic listeners and states a general dharmic principle: righteous people attain higher worlds through acts of giving, emphasizing modest gifts offered sincerely and within one’s means.
