अलर्कोपाख्यानम् — Indriya-Nigraha and Yogic Victory
Mahābhārata 14.30
इत्युक्त: स तपो घोरं जामदग्न्य: पितामहै: । आस्थित: सुमहाभागो ययौ सिद्धि च दुर्गमाम्
ity uktaḥ sa tapo ghoraṃ jāmadagnyaḥ pitāmahaiḥ | āsthitaḥ sumahābhāgo yayau siddhiṃ ca durgamām ||
既蒙先祖如是训诫,阎摩达格尼之子(帕罗修罗摩)——人中至为有福者——遂修行极其严酷的苦行。凭其坚忍不移地奉持此等炽烈之“塔帕斯”(tapas),终于证得一项极难得、极罕有的灵性成就。
ब्राह्मण उवाच
Severe self-discipline (tapas), undertaken with steadiness and respect for ancestral guidance, can lead to rare inner accomplishments; ethical strength is portrayed as arising from restraint and perseverance rather than mere force.
After being instructed by his forefathers, Paraśurāma undertakes intense austerities and, through that practice, attains a difficult-to-achieve spiritual perfection (siddhi).
