Āśvamedhika-parva Adhyāya 1 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s Lament by the Gaṅgā and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel
bhuṅkṣva bhogān bhrātṛbhiś ca suhṛdbhiś ca manonugān | śocitavyaṃ na paśyāmi tvayā dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ||
The verse affirms that after fulfilling one’s dharma and restoring order, legitimate enjoyment (bhoga) is not opposed to righteousness; excessive grief is to be relinquished when it no longer serves ethical action.
Vaiśaṃpāyana addresses Yudhiṣṭhira, urging him to stop grieving and to live as a righteous king—sharing appropriate prosperity and peace with his brothers and trusted allies in the aftermath of turmoil.
