Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel on Royal Policy to Yudhiṣṭhira
naatra vaacyaṃ mahaaraaja susuukṣmam api vidyate | uṣitāḥ sma sukhaṃ nityaṃ bhavatā paripālitāḥ ||
The verse upholds rājadharma: a ruler’s foremost ethical duty is protection and welfare of those under his care. When governance is just and protective, even minute grounds for complaint do not arise, and social life becomes stable and content.
Vaiśampāyana reports a statement addressed to a king, affirming that no blame can be laid in this matter and that the speakers have lived happily because they were consistently protected and maintained under the king’s rule.
