Vyāsa’s Boon-Offer and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Remorse in the Forest Assembly
vaiśampāyana uvāca etac chrutvā ca sarveṣāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām
The verse foregrounds attentive listening to counsel and the moral weight carried by the ‘mahātman’ ideal: noble persons are expected to respond to what they hear—especially dharmic instruction or grave news—with restraint, responsibility, and ethical action.
The narrator signals a transition: after some statement or message has been delivered, the focus shifts to the collective reaction of the Pāṇḍavas, preparing the next lines that describe their emotional and practical response within the Ashramavāsika context.
