Vyāsa’s Inquiry into Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Tapas and the Identification of Vidura with Dharma

Dṛṣṭvā putrāṁs tathā pautrān sānubandhān janādhipaḥ |
Dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ kim akarod rājā caiva Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
The verse frames an ethical inquiry: when confronted with the return/vision of loved ones and the web of kinship, how should rulers respond—through restraint, dharmic composure, and right action rather than being driven solely by attachment or grief.
Janamejaya asks the narrator to describe the immediate reactions and actions of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Yudhiṣṭhira after they behold their sons, grandsons, and related companions who have appeared (as described in the surrounding episode).
