अश्रमवासिनां विषादः — Lament in Hastināpura after the Elders’ Forest Withdrawal
मम पुत्रेण मूढेन पापेनाकृतबुद्धिना
mama putreṇa mūḍhena pāpenākṛtabuddhinā
“皆因我那儿子——愚昧迷妄、罪业深重、全无正见——……”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The line frames ethical failure as rooted in delusion and defective judgment: when a leader (or heir) is mūḍha and akṛtabuddhi, sinful action follows and brings ruin, prompting later remorse. It underscores personal accountability and the necessity of wise discernment (buddhi) in dharmic conduct.
Vaiśaṃpāyana narrates a lamenting reflection in which the speaker refers to “my son” as deluded and sinful, setting up an explanation of how that son’s misguided choices led to grievous outcomes. The phrase functions as a self-reproachful attribution of the catastrophe to the son’s moral and intellectual failings.
