Attempt to Dissuade Kuntī; Commencement of Forest Residence
वैशम्पायन उवाच एवं स राजा कुरुवृद्धवर्य: समागततस्तैर्नरदेवपुत्रै: । पप्रच्छ सर्व कुशलं तदानीं गतेषु सर्वेष्वथ तापसेषु
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
evaṁ sa rājā kuruvṛddhavaryaḥ samāgatastair naradevaputraiḥ |
papraccha sarva-kuśalaṁ tadānīṁ gateṣu sarveṣv atha tāpaseṣu ||
毗湿摩耶那说道:于是,俱卢族诸长老中最年迈而最尊贵的国王持国(Dhṛtarāṣṭra),与那些王子——诸王之子——相会之后,待一切苦行仙人各归其林居之所,便在当时询问众人的安康。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even in a forest-āśrama context marked by loss and withdrawal, dharma expresses itself through basic social ethics: an elder and ruler-figure begins by asking after the welfare (kuśala) of others, sustaining respect, order, and compassion.
After the ascetics leave for their huts, Dhṛtarāṣṭra meets the visiting princes and inquires about everyone’s well-being; the verse functions as a transition from the ascetics’ presence to the king’s direct conversation with the royal youths.
