Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Public Request for Consent to Enter the Forest (अनुज्ञा-प्रार्थना)
अफ्--शक+ चतुर्दशो 5 ध्याय: राजा धृतराष्ट्रके द्वारा मृत व्यक्तियोंके लिये श्राद्ध एवं विशाल दान-यज्ञका अनुष्ठान वैशम्पायन उवाच विदुरेणैवमुक्तस्तु धृतराष्ट्रो जनाधिप: । प्रीतिमानभवद् राजन् राज्ञो जिष्णोश्व॒ कर्मणि
vaiśampāyana uvāca | vidureṇaivam uktas tu dhṛtarāṣṭro janādhipaḥ | prītimān abhavad rājan rājño jiṣṇoś ca karmaṇi ||
毗舍波耶那说道:噢,阇那美阇耶王!毗度罗如此言毕,持国王——人间之主——大为欢喜,因由提施提罗王与吉什努(阿周那)的作为而心生欣悦。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the moral weight of righteous deeds: a king’s true satisfaction arises when he recognizes dharmic conduct in others—here, Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s pleasure is directed toward the actions of Yudhiṣṭhira and Arjuna, implying approval of responsible, ethically grounded leadership after suffering.
After Vidura speaks to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the narrator reports Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s reaction: he becomes pleased, specifically regarding what Yudhiṣṭhira and Arjuna have done. This sets the tone for subsequent acts in the Āśramavāsika context, where post-war duties and rites become prominent.
