Yayāti–Indra Dialogue and Aṣṭaka’s Inquiry

yayātir uvāca | ṛtuṃ vai yācamānāyā bhagavan nānyacetasā | duhitur dānavendrasya dharmyam etat kṛtaṃ mayā ||

Educational Q&A

The passage frames conjugal access during the proper fertile period (ṛtu) as a dharmic obligation within a lawful relationship. Refusing a rightful request is portrayed as a grave ethical fault, likened—by learned authorities—to embryo-killing, emphasizing responsibility toward procreation and marital duty.

Yayāti defends his conduct before Śukra: he says he united with the Dānava-king’s daughter because she requested her ṛtu, and he acted without ulterior motive. He supports his defense by citing the dharmaśāstric view that denying such a lawful request is a serious sin.
