Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition
vaiśampāyana uvāca | kālakīrtir iti khyātaḥ pṛthivyāṃ so ’bhavan nṛpaḥ | candrahanteti yaḥ teṣāṃ kīrtitaḥ pravaro ’suraḥ ||
The passage reinforces a Mahābhārata motif: beings of great power (including Asuras) can be reborn among humans, and worldly fame and rulership are shown as outcomes within a larger karmic and cosmic framework rather than purely human achievement.
Vaiśampāyana continues a catalog of powerful Asuras who incarnate as earthly kings. In this verse he identifies one rebirth as the king named Kālākīrti and mentions the foremost Asura known as Candrahantā in the same genealogical sequence.
