The verse highlights how rivalry and possessive desire can overwhelm judgment: when the mind fixes on an object (“mine alone”), the body and conduct follow impulsively. In dharmic terms, it warns that self-control and restraint are essential, especially for rulers, because unchecked passion quickly turns into conflict.
At Draupadī’s svayaṃvara, the assembled kings glare at one another competitively. Inflamed by desire and the thought that she will belong to them, they abruptly rise from their royal seats, signaling mounting tension among the suitors.
