Aurva Episode: Restoration of Sight and Restraint of World-Destructive Anger
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: Aṅgāraparṇa gandharva, vitta māṃ svabalāśrayam; ahaṃ hi mānī ca īrṣyuś ca, Kuberasya priyaḥ sakhā.
The verse highlights how pride and jealousy can shape one’s conduct: Aṅgāraparṇa defines himself by power, status, and association with Kubera, using these as grounds to intimidate others. Ethically, it serves as a caution that self-assertion without restraint tends toward hostility rather than dharmic self-mastery.
Aṅgāraparṇa identifies himself to the approaching men and issues a warning to keep their distance. He proclaims his nature (proud, jealous), his reliance on personal strength, and his prestigious connection to Kubera, establishing his authority and the threat he poses in the encounter.
