Drupada’s Putrakāmeṣṭi: The Sacrificial Birth of Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Kṛṣṇā
मया हत्सृज्य सुहृदः स्वधर्म स्वजनं तथा । वृतो<यं पुरुषव्याप्रस्तव पुत्र: पति: शुभे,'शुभे! मैंने अपने हितैषी सुहृदों, स्वजनों तथा स्वधर्मका परित्याग करके आपके पुत्र पुरुषसिंह भीमसेनको अपना पति चुना है
mayā hṛtsṛjya suhṛdaḥ svadharmaṃ svajanaṃ tathā | vṛto 'yaṃ puruṣavyāghras tava putraḥ patiḥ śubhe ||
毗湿摩耶那说道:“吉祥的夫人啊,我舍弃了关爱我的友人、自己的亲族,甚至也暂置自身的法度之责;我已择定你的儿子——人中猛虎毗摩塞那——为我的夫君。”
वैशमग्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights an ethical tension: personal choice in marriage is asserted even at the cost of abandoning customary supports—friends, kin, and one’s expected dharma—showing how desire, agency, and social duty can come into conflict in epic narrative.
A woman (addressed as “Śubhe”) declares that she has rejected her well-wishers, relatives, and customary obligations, and has chosen the addressee’s son—praised as a ‘tiger among men’—as her husband; Vaiśaṃpāyana reports this statement.
