The verse highlights how social legitimacy and titles can be used as tools of power: Duryodhana converts a moral-social objection (fighting a ‘non-king’) into a political solution (granting kingship), showing how dharma-language and honor-codes can be manipulated to advance rivalry and conflict.
In the public martial display, Karṇa challenges Arjuna. When the issue of Karṇa’s royal status arises, Duryodhana immediately installs him as king of Aṅga so that Arjuna cannot refuse combat on the grounds that Karṇa is not a king.
