Adhyāya 125: Raṅga-pradarśana — Arjuna’s Entry and Astric Demonstration (रङ्गप्रदर्शनम्)

(ततः पुरोहित: स्नात्वा प्रेतकर्मणि पारग: । हिरण्यशकलान्याज्यं तिलान्‌ दधि च तण्डुलान्‌ ।। उदकुम्भं सपरशुं समानीय तपस्विभि: । अश्वमेधाग्निमाहृत्य यथान्यायं समन्ततः ।। काश्यप: कारयामास पाण्डो: प्रेतस्य तां क्रियाम्‌ ।। तदनन्तर प्रेतकर्मके पारंगत विद्वान्‌ पुरोहित काश्यपने स्नान करके सुवर्णखण्ड, घृत, तिल, दही, चावल, जलसे भरा घड़ा और फरसा आदि वस्तुओंको एकत्र करके तपस्वी मुनियोंद्वारा अश्वमेधकी अग्नि मँगवायी और उसे चारों ओरसे चितासे छुलाकर यथायोग्य शास्त्रीय विधिसे पाण्डुका दाह-संस्कार करवाया। अहताम्बरसंवीतो भ्रातृभि: सहितो5नघ: । उदकं कृतवांस्तत्र पुरोहितमते स्थित: ।। अर्हतस्तस्य कृत्यानि शतशूड्ननिवासिन: । तापसा विधिवच्चक्रुश्नारणा ऋषिभि: सह ।।) भाइयोंसहित निष्पाप युधिष्ठिरने नूतन वस्त्र धारण करके पुरोहितकी आज्ञाके अनुसार जलांजलि देनेका कार्य पूरा किया। शतशृंगनिवासी तपस्वी मुनियों और चारणोंने आदरणीय राजा पाण्डुके परलोक-सम्बन्धी सब कार्य विधिपूर्वक सम्पन्न किये। इति श्रीमहा भारते आदिपर्वणि सम्भवपर्वणि पाण्डूपरमे चतुर्विशत्यधिकशततमो<ध्याय:

tataḥ purohitaḥ snātvā pretakarmaṇi pāragāḥ | hiraṇyaśakalāny ājyaṃ tilān dadhi ca taṇḍulān || udakumbhaṃ saparaśuṃ samānīya tapassvibhiḥ | aśvamedhāgnim āhṛtya yathānyāyaṃ samantataḥ || kāśyapaḥ kārayāmāsa pāṇḍoḥ pretasya tāṃ kriyām || ahatāmbarasaṃvīto bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito 'naghaḥ | udakaṃ kṛtavāṃs tatra purohitamate sthitaḥ || arhatas tasya kṛtyāni śataśṛṅganivāsinaḥ | tāpasā vidhivac cakruś cāraṇā ṛṣibhiḥ saha ||

毗湿摩波耶那说道:其后,家祭司——沐浴毕,且精通亡者之礼——备齐金片、酥油、芝麻、酸乳与米,又取盛水之罐与斧钺,并在苦行仙人的协助下迎来马祭(Aśvamedha)之圣火。迦叶波依律在四周安置妥当,使为亡者般度举行丧葬之仪。随后,无垢的坚战身着新衣,与诸弟同在其处奉献水奠,遵从祭司之教。居于沙多施陵伽的苦行者,与恰罗那、诸仙(ṛṣi)一道,依仪完成了那位可敬之王应受的一切身后之礼。于是,《摩诃婆罗多》阿底篇《三婆婆篇》第一百二十四章终。

Educational Q&A

Dharma is shown as disciplined responsibility in times of loss: the living honor the dead through prescribed rites, guided by learned authority (the purohita) and supported by community witnesses (ascetics, ṛṣis, and Cāraṇas). Ethical conduct here is not abstract—it is enacted through correct, respectful ritual action and filial duty.

After Pāṇḍu’s death, the priest Kāśyapa prepares the required ritual substances and brings a sacred fire associated with the Aśvamedha. He conducts Pāṇḍu’s funerary rites according to rule. Yudhiṣṭhira, wearing fresh garments and accompanied by his brothers, performs the water-oblation as instructed. Ascetics of Śataśṛṅga, together with ṛṣis and Cāraṇas, complete the remaining posthumous rites.
