एता दग्धा न गन्तव्यं पीडादिः किल मानवैः / विशाखात्रयमादित्ये पूर्वाषाढात्रये शशी
etā dagdhā na gantavyaṃ pīḍādiḥ kila mānavaiḥ / viśākhātrayamāditye pūrvāṣāḍhātraye śaśī
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda)
Concept: Kāla-doṣa: certain time-nakṣatra combinations are ‘burnt’ (dagdha) and should be avoided for journeys to prevent suffering.
Vedantic Theme: Prārabdha and kāla as an operative condition within vyavahāra; prudence and restraint as dharmic intelligence.
Application: Avoid initiating travel/major undertakings when Sun is in Viśākhā tri-pada or Moon in Pūrvāṣāḍhā tri-pada; choose alternative muhūrtas.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: temporal/astrological (nakshatra-pada)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.59 (muhūrta/nakṣatra-yoga section); Related ‘dagdha’/inauspicious yoga lists in adjacent verses 1.59.36–39
This verse teaches that certain astronomical combinations are considered inauspicious (‘burnt’) and should be avoided for setting out, as they are associated with increased likelihood of obstacles and distress.
Alongside teachings on ethics and post-death realities, the text also advises practical disciplines—like choosing proper timing (muhūrta)—to minimize harm and maintain orderly, dharmic conduct in worldly life.
If you follow traditional muhūrta practices, avoid initiating major travel or high-stakes undertakings during explicitly inauspicious nakṣatra combinations; otherwise, treat it as a reminder to plan carefully and avoid starting important tasks under clearly unfavorable conditions.
