narmadā bhrātṛbhir dattā purukutsāya yoragaiḥ tayā rasātalaṁ nīto bhujagendra-prayuktayā
Before describing the descendants of Purukutsa, the son of Māndhātā, Śukadeva Gosvāmī first describes how Purukutsa was married to Narmadā, who was induced to take him to the lower region of the universe.
This verse states that Purukutsa was led to Rasātala through Narmadā, who was commissioned by the king of the serpents—indicating a divine/nāga-arranged purpose for his descent.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī speaks this verse while narrating the lineage and deeds of Mandhātā’s descendants to King Parīkṣit.
The verse highlights that major turns in life can unfold by higher orchestration; a devotee can cultivate steadiness and dharma, trusting that duty performed in alignment with divine arrangement leads to auspicious outcomes.
