Speaker: Parasara
Topic: Extension of non-ownership to progeny and bodily lineage; futility of ‘svāmya’ over anātman
Teaching: Ethical
Quality: authoritative
Concept: Even with respect to children and grandchildren produced through the body, the wise do not assert proprietorship, for the body itself is non-Self and perishable.
Vedantic Theme: Moksha
Application: Love family as dharmic responsibility without possessiveness; remember mortality to soften control and cultivate compassion and service.
Vishishtadvaita: Relations are real but subordinate: family bonds are to be sanctified as service to the Lord in His jīvas, not as egoic ownership rooted in dehābhimāna.
Vishnu Form: Para-Brahman
Bhakti Type: Shanta
This verse stresses that the body is not the true Self; therefore, claiming ownership over it is ignorance, and recognizing this supports detachment and liberation.
He points out that even sons and grandsons arise from the body, yet the wise do not treat the perishable body as 'I' or 'mine'—undermining the basis of attachment.
By separating the Self from the perishable body, the teaching aligns the seeker toward the Supreme Reality beyond matter—ultimately oriented to Vishnu as the sustaining, transcendent ground of liberation in Vaishnava thought.
