Śivarātri-vrata Udyāpana-vidhi
Completion Rite for the Śivarātri Observance
A devotee/pilgrim addressing Lord Shiva (as narrated by Suta Goswami in the Kotirudra context)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Rudra
Sthala Purana: A standard ‘nyūna-sampūrṇa’ prayer: after completing vrata/pūjā at a Śiva-sthāna, the devotee asks Śiva to perfect any deficiencies—highlighting that ritual completeness ultimately depends on divine prasāda.
Significance: Assures pilgrims that imperfect performance (due to limitation of means/knowledge) can still become spiritually efficacious through Śiva’s grace—encouraging sincere practice over anxiety.
Mantra: mayā bhaktyanusāreṇa vratametatkṛtaṃ śivā | nyūnaṃ sampūrṇatāṃ yātu prasādāttava śaṅkara
Type: stotra
Role: liberating
It teaches Shaiva humility: even sincere worship may be imperfect, and the devotee relies on Śiva’s prasāda to make the vow spiritually complete—highlighting grace as the fulfiller of sādhanā.
In Linga/Saguṇa worship, offerings and vows are acts of devotion directed to the compassionate Lord; this verse is the closing surrender that asks Śiva to accept the worship and rectify any ritual or inner deficiency.
It implies concluding a vrata with a kṣamā-prārthanā (forgiveness/completion prayer) and surrendering results to Śiva—often alongside japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and a final offering.
