Vyāsa–Śaunaka and the Sages: Opening Dialogue of the Kailāsa-saṃhitā
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
The verse highlights dharmic preparation for sacred teaching: respectful reception of the guru and a calm, dignified setting that supports śravaṇa (listening) and inner receptivity—key to Shaiva understanding of grace (anugraha).
It sets the narrative frame for instruction: in Shaiva tradition, right conduct and reverence precede receiving teachings about Pati (Shiva), the path of devotion, and proper forms of worship such as Linga-upāsanā.
It implies a sāttvic discipline: offer a respectful āsana to the teacher/deity, sit steadily, and listen with composure—supporting mantra-japa and contemplation once the teaching begins.
