Prakarana 12

यह सोपान ‘विजय-शुद्धि’ का है: भीतर के रावण (अहंकार, काम-क्रोध-लोभ) का संहार, और विजय के बाद ‘कृपा-व्यवस्था’ (जीवनदान, राज्याभिषेक, गृह-प्रेषण) द्वारा धर्म का पुनर्संस्थापन। लंका-काण्ड में युद्ध बाह्य है, पर उसका फल अंतःकरण में ‘रामाकार’ होना है—यही मुक्ति-सीढ़ी का निर्णायक पायदान है जहाँ भक्ति केवल भाव नहीं रहती, वह बंधन काटने वाली शक्ति बनती है।

यह प्रकरण ‘विजय-शुद्धि’ का रूपक है—बाह्य युद्ध का अंत, पर अंतःकरण में ‘रामाकार’ होने की शुरुआत। (1) अनुशासन: विजय के बाद भी मर्यादा—शक्ति का संयम। (2) देव-स्तुति: लोक-व्यवस्था के संरक्षक भी परम-सत्ता के आगे आश्रित; ‘स्वार्थ’ का शोधन भक्ति में। (3) निर्गुण-सगुण ऐक्य: ब्रह्मा की नेति-नेति-सी वाणी और राम की सगुण लीला एक ही सत्य के दो आयाम—ज्ञान का फल भक्ति, और भक्ति का फल मुक्ति। (4) करुणा-प्रधान विजय: शत्रु-वध से बड़ा कार्य—अपने जनों का जीवनदान; ‘धर्म-विजय’ का प्रमाण। (5) पुनर्जीवन: अमृत-वृष्टि से कपि-रीछों का उठना—भक्ति का प्रतिफल केवल परलोक नहीं, जीवन में भी पुनर्स्थापन; टूटे हुए प्राण/आशा का लौटना। (6) शुद्धि/स्नान/गृह-प्रेषण: राज्याभिषेक और गृह-व्यवस्था—धर्म का पुनर्संस्थापन; विजय का सामाजिक-नैतिक फल। (7) पुष्पक-विमान: ऐश्वर्य का अहंकार नहीं, सेवा-यात्रा; ‘राजस’ का ‘मंगल’ में रूपांतरण।

Verse 242 (छंद)

किए सुखी कहि बानी सुधा सम बल तुम्हारें रिपु हयो। पायो बिभीषन राज तिहुँ पुर जसु तुम्हारो नित नयो।। मोहि सहित सुभ कीरति तुम्हारी परम प्रीति जो गाइहैं। संसार सिंधु अपार पार प्रयास बिनु नर पाइहैं।।

kiye sukhī kahi bānī sudhā-sama bala tumhāreṃ ripu hayo. pāyo bibhīṣana rāja tihuṃ pura jasu tumhāro nita nayo.. mohi sahita subha kīrati tumhārī parama prīti jo gāihiṃ. saṃsāra siṃdhu apāra pāra prayāsa binu nara pāihiṃ..

With nectar-like words he made them glad: by your might the foe has been destroyed. Vibhishana has obtained the kingdom; through the three worlds your glory is ever new. Whoever sings your auspicious fame with supreme love—together with me— will cross the boundless ocean of the world without laborious striving.

Verse 243 (दोहा/सोरठा)

प्रभु के बचन श्रवन सुनि नहिं अघाहिं कपि पुंज। बार बार सिर नावहिं गहहिं सकल पद कंज।।106।।

prabhu ke bacana śravaṇa suni nahiṃ aghāhiṃ kapi puṃja. bāra bāra sir nāvahiṃ gahahiṃ sakala pada kaṃja..106..

Hearing the Lord’s words with their ears, the hosts of monkeys were never sated. Again and again they bowed their heads and clung to his lotus-feet. (106)

पुनि प्रभु बोलि लियउ हनुमाना। लंका जाहु कहेउ भगवाना।। समाचार जानकिहि सुनावहु। तासु कुसल लै तुम्ह चलि आवहु।। तब हनुमंत नगर महुँ आए। सुनि निसिचरी निसाचर धाए।। बहु प्रकार तिन्ह पूजा कीन्ही। जनकसुता देखाइ पुनि दीन्ही।। दूरहि ते प्रनाम कपि कीन्हा। रघुपति दूत जानकीं चीन्हा।। कहहु तात प्रभु कृपानिकेता। कुसल अनुज कपि सेन समेता।। सब बिधि कुसल कोसलाधीसा। मातु समर जीत्यो दससीसा।। अबिचल राजु बिभीषन पायो। सुनि कपि बचन हरष उर छायो।।

puni prabhu boli liyau hanumānā. laṅkā jāhu kaheu bhagavānā.. samācāra jānakīhi sunāvahu. tāsu kusala lai tumha cali āvahu.. taba hanumaṃta nagara mahuṃ āe. suni nisi-carī nisācara dhāe.. bahu prakāra tinh pūjā kīnhī. janaka-sutā dekhāi puni dīnhī.. dūrahi te pranāma kapi kīnhā. raghupati dūta jānakīṃ cīnhā.. kahahu tāta prabhu kṛpā-niketā. kusala anuj kapi sena sametā.. saba bidhi kusala kosalādhīsā. mātu samara jītyo das-sīsā.. abicala rāju bibhīṣana pāyo. suni kapi bacana haraṣa ura chāyo..

Then the Lord summoned Hanuman: “Go to Lanka,” said the Blessed One. “Tell Janaki the news, and bring back word of her welfare.” Hanuman then entered the city; hearing of it, the rākṣasīs and rākṣasas ran forth. In many ways they honored him, and again showed him to the daughter of Janaka. From afar the monkey made obeisance; Janaki recognized him as Raghuapati’s envoy. “Tell me, dear child—how fares the Lord, the abode of grace? And how fares his younger brother, along with the monkey host?” “In every way the Lord of Kosala is well. Mother, in battle he has conquered the ten-headed foe. Vibhishana has obtained an unshakable kingdom.” Hearing the monkey’s words, joy spread through her heart.

अति हरष मन तन पुलक लोचन सजल कह पुनि पुनि रमा। का देउँ तोहि त्रेलोक महुँ कपि किमपि नहिं बानी समा। सुनु मातु मैं पायो अखिल जग राजु आजु न संसयं। रन जीति रिपुदल बंधु जुत पस्यामि राममनामयं।।

ati haraṣa mana tana pulaka locana sajala kaha puni puni ramā. kā deuँ tohi treloka mahuँ kapi kimapi nahiṃ bānī samā.. sunu mātu maiṃ pāyo akhila jaga rāju āju na saṃsayaṃ. rana jīti ripudala baṃdhu juta pasyāmi rāmamanāmayaṃ..

Overwhelmed with joy—her whole being thrilled, her eyes brimming with tears—Sita spoke again and again: “What can I give you, O monkey? In the three worlds there is nothing; words cannot contain it. Listen, dear child: today I have obtained the sovereignty of the entire world—of this there is no doubt. Having won the battle and routed the enemy host, I shall behold Rama, free from all distress, together with his brother.”

Verse 246 (दोहा/सोरठा)

सुनु सुत सदगुन सकल तव हृदयँ बसहुँ हनुमंत। सानुकूल कोसलपति रहहुँ समेत अनंत।।107।।

sunu suta sadguṇa sakala tava hṛdayaṁ basahuṁ hanumanta | sānukūla kosalapati rahahuṁ sameta anaṁta ||107||

Listen, my son: may every noble virtue take up its abode in your heart, O Hanuman. May the Lord of Kosala ever remain gracious to you—He who is infinite in His being and glory.

अब सोइ जतन करहु तुम्ह ताता। देखौं नयन स्याम मृदु गाता।। तब हनुमान राम पहिं जाई। जनकसुता कै कुसल सुनाई।। सुनि संदेसु भानुकुलभूषन। बोलि लिए जुबराज बिभीषन।। मारुतसुत के संग सिधावहु। सादर जनकसुतहि लै आवहु।। तुरतहिं सकल गए जहँ सीता। सेवहिं सब निसिचरीं बिनीता।। बेगि बिभीषन तिन्हहि सिखायो। तिन्ह बहु बिधि मज्जन करवायो।। बहु प्रकार भूषन पहिराए। सिबिका रुचिर साजि पुनि ल्याए।। ता पर हरषि चढ़ी बैदेही। सुमिरि राम सुखधाम सनेही।। बेतपानि रच्छक चहुँ पासा। चले सकल मन परम हुलासा।। देखन भालु कीस सब आए। रच्छक कोपि निवारन धाए।। कह रघुबीर कहा मम मानहु। सीतहि सखा पयादें आनहु।। देखहुँ कपि जननी की नाईं। बिहसि कहा रघुनाथ गोसाई।। सुनि प्रभु बचन भालु कपि हरषे। नभ ते सुरन्ह सुमन बहु बरषे।। सीता प्रथम अनल महुँ राखी। प्रगट कीन्हि चह अंतर साखी।।

“Now, dear one, make that very arrangement: let my eyes behold the dark-hued Lord with His gentle frame.” Then Hanuman went to Rama and told Him of Janaka’s daughter’s welfare. Hearing the message, the Sun-race’s ornament summoned the crown-prince Vibhishana: “Depart with the Wind-god’s son; with due honor bring Janaka’s daughter here.” At once they all went where Sita was; all the female demons served her, now subdued. Quickly Vibhishana instructed them and had them bathe her in many ways; they dressed her in various ornaments and brought a splendidly adorned palanquin. Joyfully Vaidehi mounted it, remembering Rama, the abode of bliss, the beloved. Guards with staves in hand surrounded her on every side; all moved on with hearts filled with great delight. The bears and monkeys came to see; the guards rushed angrily to keep them back. Rama said: “What is this pride? Bring Sita on foot, my friend.” “Look upon her as a mother,” said Raghunath, smiling. Hearing the Lord’s words, bears and monkeys rejoiced; from the sky the gods rained down many flowers. Sita first entered the fire, wishing to make her inner truth a public witness.

Verse 248 (दोहा/सोरठा)

तेहि कारन करुनानिधि कहे कछुक दुर्बाद। सुनत जातुधानीं सब लागीं करै बिषाद।।108।।

tehi kārana karunānidhi kahe kachuka durbāda | sunata jātudhānīṁ saba lāgīṁ karai biṣāda ||108||

For that very reason the Ocean of Compassion spoke a few stern words; hearing them, all the demon-women fell into dejection.

Verse 249 (चौपाई)

प्रभु के बचन सीस धरि सीता। बोली मन क्रम बचन पुनीता।। लछिमन होहु धरम के नेगी। पावक प्रगट करहु तुम्ह बेगी।। सुनि लछिमन सीता कै बानी। बिरह बिबेक धरम निति सानी।। लोचन सजल जोरि कर दोऊ। प्रभु सन कछु कहि सकत न ओऊ।। देखि राम रुख लछिमन धाए। पावक प्रगटि काठ बहु लाए।। पावक प्रबल देखि बैदेही। हृदयँ हरष नहिं भय कछु तेही।। जौं मन बच क्रम मम उर माहीं। तजि रघुबीर आन गति नाहीं।। तौ कृसानु सब कै गति जाना। मो कहुँ होउ श्रीखंड समाना।।

prabhu ke bacana sīsa dhari sītā | bolī mana krama bacana punītā || lachimana hohu dharama ke negī | pāvaka pragaṭa karahu tumha begī || suni lachimana sītā kai bānī | biraha bibeka dharama niti sānī || locana sajala jori kara doū | prabhu sana kachu kahi sakata na oū || dekhi rāma rukha lachimana dhāe | pāvaka pragaṭi kāṭha bahu lāe || pāvaka prabala dekhi baidehī | hṛdayaṁ haraṣa nahiṁ bhaya kachu tehī || jauṁ mana baca krama mama ura māhīṁ | taji raghubīra āna gati nāhīṁ || tau kṛsānu saba kai gati jānā | mo kahuṁ hou śrīkhaṇḍa samānā ||

Receiving the Lord’s command upon her head, Sita spoke—pure in mind, conduct, and speech: “Lakshman, be the appointed minister of dharma; quickly kindle the fire.” Hearing Sita’s words—steeped in separation, discernment, and the rule of righteousness—Lakshman, with joined hands and tearful eyes, could say nothing to the Lord. Seeing Rama’s resolve, Lakshman ran, brought much wood, and made the fire blaze. Beholding the fierce fire, Vaidehi felt joy in her heart, not fear at all. “If, in my heart, in word and deed, there is no refuge for me but Raghuvir, then let Agni—who knows the end of all—make me like sandalwood: unchanged, cool, and pure.”

श्रीखंड सम पावक प्रबेस कियो सुमिरि प्रभु मैथिली। जय कोसलेस महेस बंदित चरन रति अति निर्मली।। प्रतिबिंब अरु लौकिक कलंक प्रचंड पावक महुँ जरे। प्रभु चरित काहुँ न लखे नभ सुर सिद्ध मुनि देखहिं खरे।।1।। धरि रूप पावक पानि गहि श्री सत्य श्रुति जग बिदित जो। जिमि छीरसागर इंदिरा रामहि समर्पी आनि सो।। सो राम बाम बिभाग राजति रुचिर अति सोभा भली। नव नील नीरज निकट मानहुँ कनक पंकज की कली।।2।।

śrīkhaṇḍa sama pāvaka prabesa kiyo sumiri prabhu maithilī | jaya kosalesa mahesa bandita carana rati ati nirmalī || pratibiṁba aru laukika kalaṅka pracaṇḍa pāvaka mahuṁ jare | prabhu carita kāhūṁ na lakhe nabha sura siddha muni dekhahiṁ khare ||1|| dhari rūpa pāvaka pāni gahi śrī satya śruti jaga bidita jo | jimi chīrasāgara iṁdirā rāmahi samarpī āni so || so rāma bāma bibhāga rājati rucira ati sobhā bhalī | nav nīla nīraja nikaṭa mānahuṁ kanaka paṅkaja kī kalī ||2||

Remembering the Lord, Maithili entered the fire as though it were cool sandalwood; her love for the feet adored by Mahesh, the Lord of Kosala, was utterly stainless. All mere reflections and every worldly blot were burned away in that fierce fire—none can fathom the Lord’s play, though gods in heaven, siddhas, and sages stand and watch. (1) Assuming a form, Fire took her by the hand—he whom true Shruti proclaims and the world knows— and presented her to Rama, as Lakshmi from the Milk-ocean is brought and offered. Then Rama, with Sita radiant at His left, shone with surpassing beauty: like a fresh blue lotus beside a golden lotus-bud. (2)

Verse 251 (दोहा/सोरठा)

बरषहिं सुमन हरषि सुन बाजहिं गगन निसान। गावहिं किंनर सुरबधू नाचहिं चढ़ीं बिमान।।109(क)।।

baraṣahiṃ sumana haraṣi suni bājahĩ gagana nisāna | gāvahĩ kiṃnara surabadhū nācahĩ caṛhīṃ bimāna ||109(ka)||

Rejoicing, they showered flowers, and the victory-drums resounded in the sky. The Kinnaras sang, and the celestial ladies danced, mounted in their aerial cars.

Verse 252 (चौपाई)

जनकसुता समेत प्रभु सोभा अमित अपार। देखि भालु कपि हरषे जय रघुपति सुख सार।।109(ख)।।

janakasutā sameta prabhu sobhā amita apāra | dekhi bhālu kapi haraṣe jaya raghupati sukha sāra ||109(kha)||

With Janaka’s daughter beside Him, the Lord’s splendor was immeasurable and boundless. Beholding it, the bears and monkeys rejoiced, crying: ‘Victory to Raghupati, the very essence of bliss!’

Verse 253 (दोहा/सोरठा)

तब रघुपति अनुसासन पाई। मातलि चलेउ चरन सिरु नाई।। आए देव सदा स्वारथी। बचन कहहिं जनु परमारथी।। दीन बंधु दयाल रघुराया। देव कीन्हि देवन्ह पर दाया।। बिस्व द्रोह रत यह खल कामी। निज अघ गयउ कुमारगगामी।। तुम्ह समरूप ब्रह्म अबिनासी। सदा एकरस सहज उदासी।। अकल अगुन अज अनघ अनामय। अजित अमोघसक्ति करुनामय।। मीन कमठ सूकर नरहरी। बामन परसुराम बपु धरी।। जब जब नाथ सुरन्ह दुखु पायो। नाना तनु धरि तुम्हइँ नसायो।। यह खल मलिन सदा सुरद्रोही। काम लोभ मद रत अति कोही।। अधम सिरोमनि तव पद पावा। यह हमरे मन बिसमय आवा।। हम देवता परम अधिकारी। स्वारथ रत प्रभु भगति बिसारी।। भव प्रबाहँ संतत हम परे। अब प्रभु पाहि सरन अनुसरे।।

taba raghupati anusāsana pāī | mātali caleu carana siru nāī || āe deva sadā svārathī | bacana kahahĩ janu paramārathī || dīna bandhu dayāla raghurāyā | deva kīnhi devanha para dāyā || bisva droha rata yaha khala kāmī | nija agha gayau kumāragagāmī || tumha samarūpa brahma abināsī | sadā ekarasa sahaja udāsī || akala aguna aja anagha anāmay | ajita amoghasakti karuṇāmay || mīna kamaṭha sūkara naraharī | bāmana parasurāma bapu dharī || jaba jaba nātha suranha dukhu pāyo | nānā tanu dhari tumhaĩ nasāyo || yaha khala malina sadā suradrohī | kāma lobha mada rata ati kohī || adhama siromaṇi tava pada pāvā | yaha hamare mana bisamaya āvā || hama devatā parama adhikārī | svāratha rata prabhu bhagati bisārī || bhava prabāhaṃ santata hama pare | aba prabhu pāhi sarana anusare ||

Then, having received Rāghupati’s command, Mātali departed, bowing his head at the Lord’s feet. The gods arrived—ever self-seeking—yet spoke as though they were expounding the highest good. ‘O compassionate king of Raghu, friend of the poor! You have shown mercy even to the gods. This lustful villain is set on hostility to the world; by his own sin he has gone astray. You are the imperishable Brahman, of the same essence in all, ever of one undivided being—naturally serene and detached. Beyond limitation, without attributes, unborn, stainless, unailing; unconquered, of unfailing power, made of compassion. Assuming bodies as Fish, Tortoise, Boar, Man-Lion, Dwarf, and Paraśurāma, Whenever, O Lord, the gods suffered distress, you took diverse forms and destroyed their affliction. This foul one is ever impure, ever an enemy of the gods—engrossed in lust, greed, pride, and fierce wrath. That the chief of the vile has obtained your feet—this has filled our minds with wonder. We gods claim the highest privilege, yet, intent on self-interest, we have forgotten devotion to you. We have long been borne along in the flood of becoming; now, O Lord, protect us—we take refuge and follow your shelter.’

Verse 254 (छंद)

करि बिनती सुर सिद्ध सब रहे जहँ तहँ कर जोरि। अति सप्रेम तन पुलकि बिधि अस्तुति करत बहोरि।।110।।

kari binatī sura siddha saba rahe jahaṃ tahaṃ kara jori | ati saprema tana pulaki bidhi astuti karata bahori ||110||

Having made their supplication, all the gods and siddhas remained where they were, hands joined. Then Brahmā, his body thrilled with deep love, again began to hymn the Lord.

Verse 255 (दोहा/सोरठा)

जय राम सदा सुखधाम हरे। रघुनायक सायक चाप धरे।। भव बारन दारन सिंह प्रभो। गुन सागर नागर नाथ बिभो।। तन काम अनेक अनूप छबी। गुन गावत सिद्ध मुनींद्र कबी।। जसु पावन रावन नाग महा। खगनाथ जथा करि कोप गहा।। जन रंजन भंजन सोक भयं। गतक्रोध सदा प्रभु बोधमयं।। अवतार उदार अपार गुनं। महि भार बिभंजन ग्यानघनं।। अज ब्यापकमेकमनादि सदा। करुनाकर राम नमामि मुदा।। रघुबंस बिभूषन दूषन हा। कृत भूप बिभीषन दीन रहा।। गुन ग्यान निधान अमान अजं। नित राम नमामि बिभुं बिरजं।। भुजदंड प्रचंड प्रताप बलं। खल बृंद निकंद महा कुसलं।। बिनु कारन दीन दयाल हितं। छबि धाम नमामि रमा सहितं।। भव तारन कारन काज परं। मन संभव दारुन दोष हरं।। सर चाप मनोहर त्रोन धरं। जरजारुन लोचन भूपबरं।। सुख मंदिर सुंदर श्रीरमनं। मद मार मुधा ममता समनं।। अनवद्य अखंड न गोचर गो। सबरूप सदा सब होइ न गो।। इति बेद बदंति न दंतकथा। रबि आतप भिन्नमभिन्न जथा।। कृतकृत्य बिभो सब बानर ए। निरखंति तवानन सादर ए।। धिग जीवन देव सरीर हरे। तव भक्ति बिना भव भूलि परे।। अब दीन दयाल दया करिऐ। मति मोरि बिभेदकरी हरिऐ।। जेहि ते बिपरीत क्रिया करिऐ। दुख सो सुख मानि सुखी चरिऐ।। खल खंडन मंडन रम्य छमा। पद पंकज सेवित संभु उमा।। नृप नायक दे बरदानमिदं। चरनांबुज प्रेम सदा सुभदं।।

Victory to Rāma, ever the abode of bliss, the Lord who bears the bow and arrow—Raghu’s leader! O Lion who tears apart saṃsāra, ocean of virtues, urbane Master, sovereign Lord! Your body’s beauty is manifold and incomparable; siddhas, great sages, and poets sing your virtues. Your pure fame seized Rāvaṇa, that mighty serpent, as the Lord of birds once seized a serpent in wrath. Delighter of beings, destroyer of sorrow and fear—ever free of anger, the Lord made of awakening. Noble incarnation, of limitless virtues—crusher of earth’s burden, a mass of knowledge! Unborn, all-pervading, one, beginningless forever—compassionate Rāma, I bow in joy. Ornament of Raghu’s line, destroyer of दोष—Vibhīṣaṇa, made king, remained humble. Treasure-house of virtue and wisdom, without pride, unborn—ever I bow to the stainless Lord Rāma. Arms like mighty pillars, fierce in valor and strength—supremely skilled in annihilating hosts of the wicked. Causelessly kind to the lowly, intent on their good—radiant Lord, I bow to you with Ramā. Supreme in purpose, the cause of ferrying across—remover of the mind-born dreadful faults. Bearing lovely arrows, bow, and quiver—best of kings, with reddish-brown eyes. Beautiful, joy-giving, beloved of Śrī—destroyer of vain pride, pacifier of delusion and possessiveness. Faultless, indivisible, beyond the senses—ever of all forms, yet not exhausted by all that is. So the Vedas declare; it is no idle tale—like sun and sunlight, different yet not different. All the monkeys, their task fulfilled, gaze reverently upon your face. Accursed is life, O Lord, and even a godly body, if—without your devotion—we fall, deluded, into saṃsāra. Now, O compassionate to the poor, show mercy; remove my dividing, dualizing intellect. So that I may not act perversely; may I take sorrow for joy and live content. Destroyer of the wicked, establisher of the good—your lovely forgiveness is served at the lotus-feet by Śiva and Umā. O king of kings, grant this boon: may love for your lotus-feet ever be auspicious.

Verse 256 (चौपाई)

तेहि अवसर दसरथ तहँ आए। तनय बिलोकि नयन जल छाए।। अनुज सहित प्रभु बंदन कीन्हा। आसिरबाद पिताँ तब दीन्हा।। तात सकल तव पुन्य प्रभाऊ। जीत्यों अजय निसाचर राऊ।। सुनि सुत बचन प्रीति अति बाढ़ी। नयन सलिल रोमावलि ठाढ़ी।। रघुपति प्रथम प्रेम अनुमाना। चितइ पितहि दीन्हेउ दृढ़ ग्याना।। ताते उमा मोच्छ नहिं पायो। दसरथ भेद भगति मन लायो।। सगुनोपासक मोच्छ न लेहीं। तिन्ह कहुँ राम भगति निज देहीं।। बार बार करि प्रभुहि प्रनामा। दसरथ हरषि गए सुरधामा।।

tehi avasara dasaratha tahã āe | tanaya biloki nayana jala chāe || anuja sahita prabhu bandana kīnhā | āsirabāda pitā̃ taba dīnhā || tāta sakala tava pun̐ya prabhāū | jītyõ ajaya nisācara rāū || suni suta bacana prīti ati bāṛhī | nayana salila romāvali ṭhāṛhī || raghupati prathama prema anumānā | citai pitahi dīnheu dṛṛha gyānā || tāte umā moccha nahĩ pāyo | dasaratha bheda bhagati mana lāyo || sagunopāsaka moccha na lehī̃ | tinh kahũ rāma bhagati nija dehī̃ || bāra bāra kari prabhuhi pranāmā | dasaratha haraṣi gae suradhāmā ||

At that moment Dasharatha came there; beholding his son, his eyes were veiled with tears. The Lord, with His younger brother beside Him, bowed in reverence; then the father bestowed his blessing. “My child, all this is the fruit of your merit’s power—you have conquered the unconquerable king of the night-roamers.” Hearing his son’s words, his love surged; tears flowed, and the hair on his body stood erect. Raghupati, discerning first the nature of that love, looked upon His father and imparted firm spiritual insight. Therefore, O Uma, Dasharatha did not attain final release, for he fixed his heart in devotion that preserves distinction. Those who worship the Lord in His manifest, qualified form do not take (impersonal) moksha; to them Rama grants His own devotion. Again and again bowing to the Lord, Dasharatha departed in joy to the abode of the gods.

Verse 257 (दोहा/सोरठा)

अनुज जानकी सहित प्रभु कुसल कोसलाधीस। सोभा देखि हरषि मन अस्तुति कर सुर ईस।।112।।

anuja jānakī sahita prabhu kusala kosalādhīsa | sobhā dekhi haraṣi mana astuti kara sura īsa ||112||

With His younger brother and Janaki beside Him, the Lord—sovereign of Kosala—was in auspicious well-being. Beholding that splendor, the lord of the gods rejoiced at heart and offered praise.

Verse 258 (छंद)

जय राम सोभा धाम। दायक प्रनत बिश्राम।। धृत त्रोन बर सर चाप। भुजदंड प्रबल प्रताप।।1।। जय दूषनारि खरारि। मर्दन निसाचर धारि।। यह दुष्ट मारेउ नाथ। भए देव सकल सनाथ।।2।। जय हरन धरनी भार। महिमा उदार अपार।। जय रावनारि कृपाल। किए जातुधान बिहाल।।3।। लंकेस अति बल गर्ब। किए बस्य सुर गंधर्ब।। मुनि सिद्ध नर खग नाग। हठि पंथ सब कें लाग।।4।। परद्रोह रत अति दुष्ट। पायो सो फलु पापिष्ट।। अब सुनहु दीन दयाल। राजीव नयन बिसाल।।5।। मोहि रहा अति अभिमान। नहिं कोउ मोहि समान।। अब देखि प्रभु पद कंज। गत मान प्रद दुख पुंज।।6।। कोउ ब्रह्म निर्गुन ध्याव। अब्यक्त जेहि श्रुति गाव।। मोहि भाव कोसल भूप। श्रीराम सगुन सरूप।।7।। बैदेहि अनुज समेत। मम हृदयँ करहु निकेत।। मोहि जानिए निज दास। दे भक्ति रमानिवास।।8।। दे भक्ति रमानिवास त्रास हरन सरन सुखदायकं। सुख धाम राम नमामि काम अनेक छबि रघुनायकं।। सुर बृंद रंजन द्वंद भंजन मनुज तनु अतुलितबलं। ब्रह्मादि संकर सेब्य राम नमामि करुना कोमलं।।

Victory to Rama, the abode of splendor, the giver of repose to those who bow. He bears the quiver, the choice bow and arrows; His mighty arms are charged with invincible valor. (1) Victory to the slayer of Dushana and Khara, the crusher of the hosts of night-roamers; You have struck down this wicked one, O Lord, and all the gods have become secure again. (2) Victory to Him who removes the earth’s burden, whose greatness is generous and measureless; Victory to the compassionate foe of Ravana, who has laid the demons low. (3) The lord of Lanka, intoxicated with strength and pride, had brought gods and Gandharvas under his sway; Sages, Siddhas, men, birds, serpents—he violently set obstacles in the path of all. (4) Ever engaged in treachery toward others, exceedingly vile—he has obtained the very fruit befitting the most sinful. Now hear me, O compassionate to the lowly, O wide-lotus-eyed Lord. (5) I was steeped in great arrogance: none, I thought, was my equal. But seeing the Lord’s lotus-feet, my pride has fled, and the heap of grief has been dispelled. (6) Some meditate on Brahman without attributes, the Unmanifest sung of by the Vedas; But to me is dear the King of Kosala—Sri Rama, the personal Lord with gracious qualities. (7) With Vaidehi and Your younger brother, make Your dwelling in my heart. Know me as Your own servant; grant me devotion, O Abode of Lakshmi. (8) Grant devotion, O Abode of Lakshmi—remover of fear, refuge, bestower of ease. Rama, home of bliss, I bow to You, O Raghunatha of countless beauties. Delighter of the hosts of gods, destroyer of strife and duality, in human form of incomparable power— Served by Brahma and Shankara: Rama I bow to, tender with compassion.

Verse 259 (दोहा/सोरठा)

अब करि कृपा बिलोकि मोहि आयसु देहु कृपाल। काह करौं सुनि प्रिय बचन बोले दीनदयाल।।113।।

aba kari kṛpā biloki mohi āyasu dehu kṛpāla | kāha karaũ suni priya bacana bole dīna-dayāla ||113||

“Now, in Your mercy, look upon me and grant me Your command, O Compassionate One.” Hearing these dear words, the Merciful-to-the-lowly replied: “What would you have me do?”

Verse 260 (चौपाई)

सुनु सुरपति कपि भालु हमारे। परे भूमि निसचरन्हि जे मारे।। मम हित लागि तजे इन्ह प्राना। सकल जिआउ सुरेस सुजाना।। सुनु खगेस प्रभु कै यह बानी। अति अगाध जानहिं मुनि ग्यानी।। प्रभु सक त्रिभुअन मारि जिआई। केवल सक्रहि दीन्हि बड़ाई।। सुधा बरषि कपि भालु जिआए। हरषि उठे सब प्रभु पहिं आए।। सुधाबृष्टि भै दुहु दल ऊपर। जिए भालु कपि नहिं रजनीचर। रामाकार भए तिन्ह के मन। मुक्त भए छूटे भव बंधन।। सुर अंसिक सब कपि अरु रीछा। जिए सकल रघुपति कीं ईछा।। राम सरिस को दीन हितकारी। कीन्हे मुकुत निसाचर झारी।। खल मल धाम काम रत रावन। गति पाई जो मुनिबर पाव न।।

sunu surapati kapi bhālu hamāre | pare bhūmi nisacaranhi je māre || mama hita lāgi taje inha prānā | sakala jiāu suresa sujānā || sunu khagesa prabhu kai yaha bānī | ati agādha jānahin muni gyānī || prabhu saka tribhuana māri jiāī | kevala sakrahi dīnhi baṛāī || sudhā baraṣi kapi bhālu jiāe | haraṣi uṭhe saba prabhu pahĩ āe || sudhābṛṣṭi bhai duhu dala ūpara | jie bhālu kapi nahĩ rajanīcara | rāmākāra bhae tinh ke mana | mukta bhae chūṭe bhava bandhana || sura aṃsika saba kapi aru rīchā | jie sakala raghupati kī̃ īchā || rāma sarisa ko dīna hitakārī | kīnhe mukuta nisācara jhārī || khala mala dhāma kāma rata rāvan | gati pāī jo munibara pāva na ||

“Hear me, lord of the gods: our monkeys and bears lie upon the ground, slain by the night-roamers. For my sake they have given up their lives; revive them all, O wise Indra.” Hear, O Khagesh: this utterance of the Lord is exceedingly unfathomable—so know the sages and the wise. The Lord can slay and restore to life the three worlds; yet He granted this distinction to Indra alone. Raining nectar, Indra revived the monkeys and bears; in joy they all arose and came to the Lord. A shower of nectar fell upon both armies; the bears and monkeys lived, but not the night-roamers. Rama’s very form took shape within their hearts; they were freed—the bonds of becoming were cut. All the monkeys and bears were portions of the gods; they lived again solely by Raghupati’s will. Who is like Rama, benefactor of the lowly? He liberated even the demon-host. Ravana—engrossed in desire, a dwelling of filth and wickedness—attained a state that even great sages do not obtain.

Verse 261 (दोहा/सोरठा)

सुमन बरषि सब सुर चले चढ़ि चढ़ि रुचिर बिमान। देखि सुअवसरु प्रभु पहिं आयउ संभु सुजान।।114(क)।। परम प्रीति कर जोरि जुग नलिन नयन भरि बारि। पुलकित तन गदगद गिराँ बिनय करत त्रिपुरारि।।114(ख)।।

sumana baraṣi saba sura cale caṛhi-caṛhi rucira bimāna | dekhi su-avasaru prabhu pahiṁ āyu sambhu sujāna ||114(ka)|| parama prīti kari jori juga nalina nayana bhari bāri | pulakita tana gadagada girāṁ binaya karata tripurāri ||114(kha)||

Showering down flowers, all the gods departed, mounting their splendid aerial cars. Seeing the auspicious moment, wise Śambhu came into the Lord’s presence. With deepest love he joined his palms; his lotus-eyes brimmed with tears. His body thrilled, his voice faltered, as Tripurāri made his humble supplication.
