Hanuman’s Post-Conflagration Self-Examination and Assurance of Sita’s Safety
धिगस्तु मां सुदुर्बुद्धिं निर्लज्जं पापकृत्तमम्।अचिन्तयित्वा तां सीतामग्निदं स्वामिघातुकम्।।।।
dhig astu māṁ sudurbuddhiṁ nirlajjaṁ pāpakṛttamam | acintayitvā tāṁ sītām agnidaṁ svāmighātukam ||
Hổ thẹn thay cho ta—kẻ ngu muội, trơ trẽn, đầy tội lỗi—chẳng nghĩ đến nàng Sītā trước, lại châm lửa, làm điều phản bội đại nghĩa của chủ ta.
'Fie upon me, a wicked, shameless person and the greatest sinner for betraying the master and setting fire to the city without thinking of Sita.
Dharma requires mindful action aligned with one’s duty; even a heroic deed becomes adharma if done in heedlessness and endangers the innocent and the mission of truth.
After setting Laṅkā aflame, Hanumān fears Sītā may have been harmed and condemns himself for acting without adequate consideration.
Moral responsibility: Hanumān displays integrity by judging his own actions strictly, prioritizing Sītā’s safety and Rāma’s purpose.
