Sugriva’s Remorse and Tara’s Lament after Vali’s Death
वधो हि मे मतो नासीत्स्वमाहात्म्याव्यतिक्रमात्।ममाऽसीद्बुद्धिदौरात्म्यात्प्राणहारी व्यतिक्रमः।।
vadho hi me mato nāsīt sva-māhātmyāvyatikramāt | mamā ’sīd buddhi-daurātmyāt prāṇahārī vyatikramaḥ ||
Quả thật, đối với chàng, việc giết ta vốn không phải điều nên làm, vì sẽ trái với đức hạnh cao quý của chính chàng; nhưng do tâm ý tà vạy của ta, đã xảy ra sự vượt lằn ranh chí mạng, đoạt lấy mạng sống.
'The idea of killing me was not acceptable to his noble nature, while my wicked thought caused his death.
It teaches self-accountability: one’s wrongful intention (buddhi-daurātmya) can trigger catastrophic outcomes, even when the other party’s nature is restrained by dharma.
In the aftermath of Vāli’s death, Sugrīva reflects that Vāli’s nobility would not have sanctioned killing him, but Sugrīva’s own crooked intent led to a deadly breach.
