Adhyāya 14: Sudēṣṇā Sends Sairandhrī to Kīcaka’s House (सुदेष्णा–सैरन्ध्री–कीचक संवादः)

(स्वेषु दारेषु मेधावी कुरुते यत्नमुत्तमम्‌ | स्वदारनिरतो हाशु नरो भद्राणि पश्यति ।।

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

svēṣu dārēṣu mēdhāvī kurutē yatnam uttamam |

svadāranirataḥ śīghraṁ naro bhadrāṇi paśyati ||

na cādharmeṇa lipyeta na cākīrtim avāpnuyāt |

svadārēṣu ratiḥ dharmo mṛtasya api na saṁśayaḥ ||

svajātidārā martyasya ihaloke paratra ca |

pretakāryāṇi kurvanti nivāpais tarpayanti ca ||

tad akṣayyaṁ ca dharmyaṁ ca svargyam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ |

svajātidārajāḥ putrā jāyante kulapūjitāḥ ||

priyā hi prāṇināṁ dārās tasmāt tvaṁ dharmabhāg bhava |

paradārarato martyo na ca bhadrāṇi paśyati ||

paradārāsmi bhadraṁ te na yuktaṁ tava sāmpratam |

dayitāḥ prāṇināṁ dārā dharmaṁ samanucintaya ||

Vaiśampāyana nói: “Người trí dốc hết sức để giữ hòa thuận với chính thê của mình; kẻ một lòng với vợ mình sớm thấy an lành và phúc lợi. Chớ để mình vấy bẩn bởi phi pháp, cũng chớ chuốc lấy ô danh. Tình yêu và sự thủy chung với vợ mình được tuyên xưng là dharma tối thượng—lợi ích ấy, không nghi ngờ, còn theo người ta cả sau khi chết. Người vợ cùng cộng đồng (cùng giai tầng) là ân nhân cho người chồng ở đời này lẫn đời sau: nàng làm các nghi lễ cho người đã khuất và làm thỏa lòng hương linh bằng nước và phẩm vật cúng. Bậc hiền triết gọi công việc ấy là bất hoại, hợp đạo, và là nhân đưa đến cõi trời; con trai sinh từ người vợ cùng cộng đồng được tôn kính trong dòng tộc. Quả thật, với mọi loài, vợ mình là người đáng yêu; vì thế, ngươi cũng hãy dự phần vào dharma. Còn kẻ đuổi theo vợ người khác thì chẳng bao giờ thấy điều lành chân thật. ‘Hơn nữa, ta là vợ của người khác—cầu điều tốt lành đến với ngươi. Lúc này, ngươi nói với ta như thế là không phải lẽ. Với mọi loài, vợ mình là người đáng yêu; hãy suy niệm về dharma.’”
