अथ चेदिपते्माता राज्ञश्नान्त:ःपुरात् तदा । जगाम यत्र सा बाला ब्राह्मणेन सहाभवत्,तदनन्तर चेदिराजकी माता उस समय अन्तःपुरसे निकलकर उसी स्थानपर गयीं, जहाँ राजकन्या दमयन्ती ब्राह्मणके साथ खड़ी थी
atha cedipateḥ mātā rājñaḥ antaḥpurāt tadā | jagāma yatra sā bālā brāhmaṇena sahābhavat ||
Bấy giờ, mẫu hậu của vua xứ Cedi bước ra khỏi nội cung và đi đến nơi nàng công chúa trẻ đang đứng cùng vị Bà-la-môn. Trong mạch truyện đang mở ra, bước đi ấy báo hiệu sự can dự của bậc trưởng thượng hoàng gia vào một tình thế tế nhị—nơi có một vị khách ẩn danh và một thiếu nữ yếu đuối—đòi hỏi người cầm quyền phải có che chở, giữ lễ và sáng suốt phân định.
