Āraṇyaka-parva Adhyāya 44 — Arjuna’s Entry into Nandana and Audience with Indra

गृहीतास्त्रस्तु कौन्तेयो भ्रातृून्‌ सस्मार पाण्डव: । पुरन्दरनियोगाच्च पञठ्चाब्दानवसत्‌ सुखी,सब अस्त्रोंकी शिक्षा ग्रहण कर लेनेपर पाण्डुपुत्र पार्थने अपने भाइयोंका स्मरण किया। परंतु पुरन्दरके विशेष अनुरोधसे वे (मानव-गणनाके अनुसार) पाँच वर्षोतक वहाँ सुखपूर्वक ठहरे रहे

gṛhītāstras tu kaunteyo bhrātṝn sasmāra pāṇḍavaḥ | purandara-niyogāc ca pañcābdān avasat sukhī ||

Khi đã tinh thông các thần khí, người con của Kuntī—Arjuna, bậc Pāṇḍava—chợt nhớ đến các huynh đệ. Nhưng theo lời thỉnh cầu và mệnh lệnh đặc biệt của Purandara (Indra), chàng vẫn an nhiên lưu lại nơi ấy năm năm, tính theo thời gian của loài người.

Educational Q&A

Even when personal longing arises (Arjuna’s wish to rejoin his brothers), dharma emphasizes disciplined completion of one’s entrusted duty and respectful obedience to a legitimate guide (Indra), especially when the task serves a larger righteous purpose.

Arjuna, having completed instruction in divine weapons, thinks of his brothers; however, Indra (Purandara) asks/commands him to stay on, and Arjuna remains there happily for five human years.
