Draupadī’s Rebuke of Jayadratha and Dhaumya’s Admonition (Āraṇyaka-parva, Adhyāya 252)
प्रहृष्मनस: सर्वे किंचिदुत्फुल्ललोचना: । साभिमानमिदं वाक्यं दुर्योधनमथाब्रुवन्
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sarve kiñcid utphullalocanāḥ |
sābhimānam idaṃ vākyaṃ duryodhanam athābruvan ||
Vaiśampāyana nói: Tất cả bọn họ đều hân hoan trong lòng, đôi mắt hơi mở rộng vì vui sướng; rồi họ cất lời với Duryodhana bằng những lời lẽ thấm đẫm kiêu ngạo.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how joy and group enthusiasm can become a vehicle for abhimāna (pride). When speech arises from arrogance rather than discernment, it tends to support adharma and poor judgment, especially in politically charged situations.
The narrator describes a gathered group—delighted and visibly excited—turning to address Duryodhana. Their emotional state and the explicit note of pride foreshadow that what they say next will be boastful or self-serving counsel rather than balanced guidance.
