मनसो दुःखमूलं तु स्नेह इत्युपलभ्यते । स्नेहात्‌ तु सज्जते जन्तुर्दुःखयोगमुपैति च,“मनके दुःखका मूल कारण क्या है? इसका पता लगानेपर 'स्नेह' (संसारमें आसक्ति)- की ही उपलब्धि होती है। इसी स्नेहके कारण ही जीव कहीं आसक्त होता और दुःख पाता है

manaso duḥkhamūlaṃ tu sneha ityupalabhyate | snehāt tu sajjate jantur duḥkhayogamupaiti ca ||

Vaiśampāyana nói: “Người ta hiểu rằng gốc rễ của nỗi khổ trong tâm là sự luyến ái (sneha), tức chấp trước. Vì luyến ái ấy, chúng sinh bám víu vào vật và vào tình thân, rồi do đó kết duyên với khổ đau.”
