The verse upholds svādhyāya (sacred study) and tapas (austerity) as defining virtues of a true sage, suggesting that disciplined learning and self-restraint generate spiritual authority and become a source of guidance and hope for others.
Vaiśaṃpāyana announces auspicious news that the renowned, long-lived ascetic Mārkaṇḍeya—known for his devotion to study and austerity—will soon arrive to meet the listeners (contextually, the Pāṇḍavas), preparing the scene for counsel and sacred narration.
