Ambā among ascetics; Hotravāhana directs her to Paraśurāma
sā bhīṣme pratikartavyam ahaṃ paśyāmi sāmpratam | tapasā vā yudhā vāpi duḥkhahetuḥ sa me mataḥ ||
The verse frames moral agency in response to suffering: the speaker identifies a perceived cause of grief and asserts that requital may be pursued through two culturally sanctioned paths—tapas (self-discipline/austerity) or yuddha (martial action). It highlights the tension between personal grievance and dharmic means of redress.
In Bhīṣma’s reported speech-context, a resolve is voiced that Bhīṣma is to be repaid for the harm believed to have led to the speaker’s misery, and that this repayment could be sought either by ascetic power or by direct combat—signaling an escalation toward confrontation while also acknowledging the alternative of spiritual exertion.
