Yudhiṣṭhira’s Lament for Karṇa and Renunciation-Oriented Self-Assessment (शोक-प्रलापः / त्याग-प्रवृत्तिः)
ख्यापनेनानुतापेन दानेन तपसापि वा । धनंजय! किया हुआ पाप कहनेसे, शुभ कर्म करनेसे, पछतानेसे, दान करनेसे और तपस्यासे भी नष्ट होता है
khyāpanenānutāpena dānena tapasāpi vā | dhanaṃjaya! kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ kathanena, śubha-karma-karaṇena, paścāttāpena, dānena ca tapasā ca api naśyati |
Yudhiṣṭhira nói: “Hỡi Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), tội lỗi đã gây ra sẽ bị tiêu trừ nhờ công khai thừa nhận, nhờ lòng ăn năn chân thành, nhờ thực hành các thiện hạnh cát tường, nhờ bố thí, và cả nhờ tu khổ hạnh.”
युधिछिर उवाच
Moral fault is not treated as irreversible: it can be cleansed through truthful acknowledgment, genuine remorse, compensatory good conduct, charity, and disciplined austerity—showing a practical path of ethical restoration within dharma.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Arjuna (calling him Dhanañjaya) and states the means by which committed sin is removed, emphasizing confession, repentance, meritorious action, charity, and tapas as remedies.
