न विश्वसेच्च नृपतिर्न चात्यर्थ च विश्वसेत्‌ । षाड्गुण्यगुणदोषांश्न नित्यं बुद्धघावलोकयेत्‌

Transliteration

na viśvasec ca nṛpatir na cātyarthaṃ ca viśvaset | ṣāḍguṇya-guṇa-doṣāṃś ca nityaṃ buddhyāvalokayet ||

Translation

Bhīṣma nói: “Vua không nên hoàn toàn đa nghi, cũng không nên đặt lòng tin quá mức, dù với người đáng tin. Phải luôn dùng trí tuệ sáng suốt mà xét kỹ công và hại của sáu sách lược trị quốc: hòa ước, chiến tranh, xuất chinh, án binh, chính sách lưỡng diện, và nương tựa—kết minh; để việc trị vì được dẫn dắt bởi sự thận trọng phân minh, chứ không bởi bốc đồng.”
