Service to Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Allocation of State Duties

dhṛtarāṣṭro mahārājaḥ pitā me daivataṃ param | śāsane 'sya priye caiva stheyaṃ matpriyakāṅkṣibhiḥ ||

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that reverence for one’s father/elder—especially a reigning king—creates a moral obligation: those who wish to please the speaker should align themselves with the elder’s commands and what pleases him, restraining personal agendas.

In the Shānti Parva’s reflective setting, a speaker underscores Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s supreme status for him and instructs others that, if they seek his goodwill, they should remain obedient to Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s rule and act in ways that please the king.
