The verse frames an ethical-ritual principle: Vedic study is not merely continuous recitation but is governed by dharma-based rules. ‘Anadhyāya’ indicates that there are legitimate occasions when study must be paused, and Vyāsa is about to explain the rationale—linking learning to discipline, purity, and proper context.
Bhīṣma narrates that Śuka has spoken something that surprises Vyāsa. In response, Vyāsa prepares to explain the specific ‘nimitta’ (cause) behind anadhyāya—setting up the next passage where he clarifies why and when study is to be suspended.
