Spiritual attainment and divine destiny are not determined solely by one’s outward category (Deva/Asura) or by dying in conflict; inner yogic stature and alignment with the Supreme can lead even a fallen foe to the highest abode of Viṣṇu.
Bhīṣma recounts that Vṛtra, struck and split by the vajra, dies but—being described as a great yogin—does not fall into a lower fate; instead he departs to the supreme realm of the radiant Lord Viṣṇu.
