Ahiṃsā as the Superior Dharma: Practical and Scriptural Reasoning
अधर्मो नास्ति ते मृत्यो संयच्छेमा: प्रजा: शुभे | मया हाक्त मृषा भद्रे भविता नेह किंचन
adharmo nāsti te mṛtyo saṁyacchemāḥ prajāḥ śubhe | mayā hy uktaṁ mṛṣā bhadre bhavitā neha kiṁcana ||
Bhīṣma nói: “Hỡi Thần Chết, ngươi sẽ không mắc tội bất chính. Hỡi bậc cát tường, hãy kìm giữ (hãy ngăn lại) những sinh linh này. Hỡi người hiền nhu, không lời nào ta đã nói ở đây có thể trở thành dối trá.”
पितामह उवाच
The verse asserts that actions aligned with a higher cosmic purpose need not incur adharma, and it emphasizes the binding power of a truthful, authoritative utterance—Bhīṣma’s word is presented as unfailing.
Bhīṣma addresses the personified Death, instructing it to restrain the destruction of beings and assuring that no sin will attach; he further declares that his statement in this matter cannot prove false.
