Indra and Namuci on grief, composure, and inevitability

तेषामयुगपद्धाव उच्छेदो नास्ति तामसे । आस्थितो युगपद्धावो व्यवहार: स लौकिक:

teṣām ayugapaddhāva ucchedo nāsti tāmase | āsthito yugapaddhāvo vyavahāraḥ sa laukikaḥ ||

Bhīṣma nói: “Trong trạng thái bị bóng tối (tamas) chi phối—như lúc ngủ say—các căn tuy không vận hành để nắm bắt đối tượng, vì đã rút về nơi nhân của chúng, nhưng tuyệt nhiên không bị tiêu diệt. Năng lực ‘đồng thời thọ nhận’ chỉ được xác lập trong sinh hoạt thế gian; trong giấc ngủ, nó không hiển lộ.”

Even when the senses cease to function in deep sleep due to tamas, they are not destroyed; their capacities remain latent. Simultaneous apprehension is a feature of waking worldly activity, not of the sleep-state where faculties withdraw into their causal condition.
