Svapna–Manas–Guṇa–Brahma-vicāra
पुरा दानवमुख्या हि क्रोधलोभसमन्विता: । बलेन मत्ता: शतशो नरकाद्या महासुरा:,पूर्वकालमें नरकासुर आदि सैकड़ों मुख्य-मुख्य दानव क्रोध और लोभके वशीभूत हो बलके मदसे मतवाले हो गये थे
purā dānavamukhyā hi krodhalobhasamanvitāḥ | balena mattāḥ śataśo narakādyā mahāsurāḥ ||
Bhishma nói: “Thuở cổ xưa, những kẻ đứng đầu trong hàng Dānava—bị cơn giận và lòng tham chế ngự—đã say men sức mạnh của chính mình. Hàng trăm đại Asura như Naraka và những kẻ khác vì thế mà trở nên cuồng ngạo.”
भीष्म उवाच
Unrestrained anger and greed, when joined with pride in strength, intoxicate the mind and drive even the powerful toward unrighteous conduct and eventual downfall; therefore self-mastery is essential to dharma.
Bhishma recalls an ancient example: many leading Dānavas/Asuras—Naraka among them—became maddened by power under the sway of anger and greed, setting up a cautionary illustration within his moral instruction.
