Dama-pradhāna-dharma (Self-restraint as the Root of Dharma) — Śānti-parva 154

Educational Q&A

Grief expressed as prolonged crying is natural but ineffective in changing death; the ethical counsel is to move from lamentation to steadiness of mind and right action, recognizing impermanence.

Jambuka addresses mourners (or a grieving person) and restrains excessive lamentation, stating that no amount of weeping can revive the deceased, thereby redirecting attention toward composure and dharmic response.
