Tapas, Tīrtha, and Moral Rehabilitation (Śānti-parva 148)

उपदिष्टो हि मे धर्म: कपोतेन महात्मना । “अब मैं पापसे मुह मोड़कर स्त्री, पुत्र तथा अपने प्यारे प्राणोंका भी परित्याग कर दूँगा। महात्मा कबूतरने मुझे विशुद्ध धर्मका उपदेश दिया है

upadiṣṭo hi me dharmaḥ kapotena mahātmanā |

Bhishma nói: “Quả thật, Dharma đã được con chim bồ câu đại tâm dạy cho ta. Quay lưng khỏi tội lỗi, ta sẽ từ bỏ cả vợ, con, và ngay cả hơi thở sinh mệnh mà ta yêu quý.” Trong lời tự xét ấy, câu chuyện nêu rõ rằng chính nghĩa chân thật có thể đòi hỏi sự hy sinh cao nhất, và sự sáng tỏ đạo đức có thể nảy sinh từ tấm gương của cả một sinh linh nhỏ bé.
